Dear Sir,

The fact that the UK Independence Party has had a dialogue with David Drew demonstrates again that UKIP puts country before Party and that it attracts support from right across the political spectrum. (C. J. Cleaver, Letters, Citizen, Feb 22nd.)

To put the record straight, we approached Mr Drew as we have approached other MPs about our membership of the European Union in general and the Lisbon Treaty in particular. We will talk to anyone on the subject.

Mr Drew is the only one who has not trotted out their Party line and is not afraid to defy the Party whips.

Old Labour has always opposed our membership of the EU, it is only New Labour that has joined the Tories in selling out our country.

For Mr(s) Cleaver to suggest that the Lisbon Treaty means nothing to us is ridiculous. No-one has campaigned harder than UKIP to get the promised referendum to give the British people a say on how, where and by whom we are governed.

Yours sincerely.

Mike Smith, County Chairman, UK Independence Party.
