UKIP Cornwall News.

Welcome from your Chairman

If you have any friends who are known Conservatives and who believed the election promise
of no further powers being transferred to Brussels without a referendum, please ask them
what they think about the EIO. This is the European Investigation Order, which gives the
police from other EU countries the powers to carry out the ‘real time’ interception of communications,
monitor a person’s bank account, and demand DNA or fingerprints from a person
in Britain.
Now let's be clear about this. The EU gave each country the choice of whether to opt in or
opt out on this issue, so we need to direct our concerns in the right direction. This hasn't
been forced on us by Brussels. It wasn't the Labour Party who did this. This was freely done
by the coalition government. You may wish to contact your MP and ask why.

I was fortunate to be able to attend a conference in Bournemouth on 25th July, where Lord
Monckton was the main speaker.
There were four of us from Cornwall, which was good to see and, as you would expect,
we were quite vocal in our opinions. Lord Monckton assured us he was there in 'listening
mode' and would be preparing a report for the leadership. From comments from the delegates,
he seems to be a very welcome addition to the Party and I do recommend getting to
an event where he will be present if you can. I do plan to invite him down for a South West
meeting at some point but it won't be for several months. He is trying to get around the country,
meeting as many members as possible. Since he was in our region on 25th July (yes, I
do realize Bournemouth is a long way from West Cornwall) and will be at the Party Conference
in Torbay in September, I feel it is only fair to leave it a little while before inviting him
down here again. However, it is not too late to book for the Torbay Conference (follow the
link on www.ukip.org) and if there is any way you can get there, I do urge you to try. We are
all very good at complaining about decisions made at some higher level but it is no good just
grumbling amongst ourselves. The Party is still small enough that any of us is able to meet
our top people if we are prepared to make a little effort. If you know people who would like to
attend but need help with transport, please try and arrange lifts where possible.
If you possibly can, just be there!

Keep an eye on the news about Greece.
Greece is to mobilise military vehicles to restore fuel supplies cut by a lorry drivers' strike, officials have said.
[BBC News 30th July 2010]
Just because it isn't making the headlines over here doesn't mean Greece is on the road to recovery. On the contrary, the situation is still very difficult and may get much worse.

Did you know……....The number of civil servants it took to administer the Roman Empire is exceeded by the staff on
Harrow Council responsible for car parking?

North Cornwall Branch
The North Cornwall branch decided to send out a newsletter to every member in early July. This was mainly to reassure them that UKIP was still alive and kicking. We had very positive and encouraging feedback which made it
plain that they appreciated being put in the picture. There were also offers of help whenever needed. The concensus of opinion favoured making UKIP heard again. It all seemed to have gone very quiet so we agreed with this.
The most pressing thing was to organise a special event night, hopefully in September. Open to all our members
and with an invite to the other branches to participate if they wish. We are waiting for confirmation of our speaker, and/or guest of honour. Then we can advertise the date and venue. This will then be followed by other themed evenings with the aim of raising both funds and profile of UKIP. The difficulty of arranging anything in North Cornwall, being a high-profile holiday area, in July/August is the cause of the delay. However, we all feel very positive and hopeful for the future of UKIP.

Camborne, Redruth & Hayle Branch
Our ‘thank you night’ at the Redruth British Legion was very well attended and a good time was had by all.
It is nice to know that two of Cornwall Council's cabinet have been writing letters in the WEST BRITON complaining about the truth I have previously written.

The first get together of the informal campaign team was held at the Crooked Inn, Trematon on Monday 12th July. It was a lovely evening, with people coming and going as it suited them but the chatter never stopped! Although it isn't intended to be a formal group, many good ideas came up and will be noted for our next campaign.
We were particularly delighted to see some of our members who have had serious health problems this year. It was great to have you with us.
Our next get together will be in September, probably in the Looe or Lostwithiel area. If you have already expressed an interest, we'll be in touch. If you would like to join us, do let Steph know on 01579 389386. Also, let us know if you would prefer a weekend or lunchtime gathering.
We also had a stand at Mount Edgecumbe charity day on 1st August. Once again it rained, though not as heavily as last year, when it was abandoned, but it did give us an opportunity to give away some UKIP 'goody bags' to the hardy souls who attended.

St Ives & Isles of Scilly Branch
St. Ives & Isles of Scilly Branch held a Garden Party atthel home of our Committee member, Bob
Smith and his wife Tacey on Sunday 10th July. The weather was very kind to us, unlike the wash-out at Iris
Parker's party last August. So we were all delighted.
A mountain of food, including delicious cream teas and home made cakes, rapidly disappeared inside the 25
members with their families and friends who came along. Isn't it amazing how much wine can be quaffed
on a Sunday afternoon !
All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable occasion, with a good sum raised for branch funds.
Grateful thanks to Bob and Tacey.

I attended a well supported conference in Bournemouth.

I am picking up the cudgels on a supporter who has offered land for affordable housing and the local
parish council have refused. I will send more details as and when this is sorted.
Our cream tea on Sunday 27th June was a great success. Ray Wyse and family won the treasure
hunt.

Bits and Pieces

Political support for national referendums on EU issues on the rise in Germany
Rheinische Post reports that politicians in Germany are proposing to introduce national referendums, following
high-turnout local referendums in Bavaria and Hamburg. While Social Democrats and Greens are
in favour of referendums, the CDU only wants to allow them on EU issues. CSU Secretary-General Alexander
Dobrindt is quoted saying that "when Germany indefinitely transfers important competences to
Europe or when new states are entering the EU, the people should be able to vote about that".

Over 250 European Arrest Warrant cases require mediation.
Eurojust's annual report has found that 256 cases were brought before it for mediation last year, involving
European Arrest Warrants (EAW) in which two, or several, member states disagreed over the EAW's
scope and proportionality, according to EUobserver. The article quotes a spokesperson for Fair Trials International
saying: "Although the European arrest warrant was intended to deliver justice, the current system
is in practice resulting in serious injustice".

Here's one to give you nightmares.
We are all aware that our electricity is fed into a national grid so that it can be pooled and accessed as required. This system seems to work pretty well and means we can all "put our kettles on at the end of Corrie Street" and receive the power we need. It is quite rare these days for any group of households to be without electricity for any length of time, which is just as well, because we are so dependent on it.
It seems the EU is working towards a European version. (http://www.smartgrids.eu/ ) This may well have advantages.. but... supposing we did decide to leave the EU and were abruptly disconnected from the European Smart Grid. How long would it take us to get a reliable power supply back up and running?
One to watch?

Obituary,
Our member Tony Green who lived at The Lizard died in October last year. St. Ives branch only learned of this
when his son Paul phoned in response to some mailing sent to Tony.
Tony had helped us out with leafleting in The Lizard area and we were very sad to hear of his death.
A message of sympathy has been sent to the family. Stuart Guppy

And some good news
A resident of Pensilva has won a judicial review to stop a planned wind turbine next to his land. This wasn't NIMBYism. The Parish has a strong environmental group, keen to do what it can to reduce demand for energy. The turbine was opposed because it would be adjacent to a World Heritage site, near and in view of an area of outstanding natural beauty, would have been a serious threat to bats and had ended up considerably larger than the original height that received planning permission.
Maybe, just maybe, a hint of real democracy is returning to this country. The Parish Council is still working with local residents to try and stop a development of 20 'affordable' homes in a totally unsuitable location. There is already enough affordable housing in the parish for local need with more planned in a more suitable location but the fight isn't yet won.
Please let me know about local planning decisions in your area so that we can include it next time. If nothing else,
these contentious decisions do seem to be getting local residents more involved with their Town and Parish Councils.
Every cloud has a silver lining, I suppose!
