If you were among the thousands of motorists stranded in snow drifts on Haldon Hill last January, you’ll be forgiven for uttering a hollow laugh the next time some idiot wibbles on about global warming.  And how odd that owning a 4x4 has suddenly become socially acceptable.  Landrover sales are booming.

The truth is that climates always change. It’s what they do. “The worst rain in 40 years” simply means that today’s heavy rain has happened before.  40 years ago…. The ancient kingdom of Nubia (now in northern Sudan) was one of the greatest empires of the ancient world, rivalling the Pharaohs. Their symbol was the cow, found carved onto thousands of temples and ruined palaces. But the Nubian Empire collapsed when the desert turned their pastures to sand..

At the recent UN World Climate Conference in Geneva, 1,500 climate scientists gathered for a meeting.  Mojib Latif (a top climate modeller) announced that we are about to enter possibly two decades of cooler temperatures: “People will say this is global warming disappearing. I am not one of the sceptics.  However, we have to ask the nasty questions ourselves or other people will do it.”

Latif predicted: “In the next few years a natural cooling trend will dominate the warming caused by humans.” As reported by New Scientist magazine (September 2009): ‘The cooling would be down to cyclical changes in the atmosphere and ocean currents in the North Atlantic Oscillation.   Breaking with climate-change orthodoxy, Latif said that the NAO was probably responsible for some of the strong warming seen around the globe in the past three decades’

Another conference delegate, Vicky Pope (from the Met Office) warned that dramatic Arctic ice loss in recent summers was partly a product of natural cycles rather than global warming.  There was much less melting last year than in 2007 or 2008.    Funny that…

It’s taking time, but one by one, our scientists are regaining their nerve and creeping out from under the sofa.
